What is Gynecomastia?

-

|

Breast enlargement in men is called gynecomastia. Breast growth in men is generally observed in three stages: infancy, adolescence, and advanced age. The age range that most frequently consults a plastic surgeon with complaints of gynecomastia can be generalized as 20 to 40 years. The main reason for the visit is not being satisfied with the image.

Having larger than normal breasts in men affects social life, just like in women. Clothing choices, sports activities, or walking around topless on the beach become very difficult for an individual suffering from gynecomastia.

What is the treatment for gynecomastia?

Before any treatment planning, it should be investigated whether there is an underlying cause for gynecomastia. Generally, the first step should be a detailed inquiry into the patient’s medical history. Hormonal disorders, the presence of a tumor, medications that cause gynecomastia, and alcohol or substance use may cause gynecomastia. Suspicious cases may require additional examinations and breast imaging. If there is an underlying cause, the complaint of gynecomastia may regress with a treatment for this problem; Otherwise, surgical treatment of gynecomastia is recommended.

How is gynecomastia surgery performed?

Two methods are generally used in the treatment of gynecomastia. The first of these is the liposuction. The other method is to remove excess breast tissue by entering through a half-moon-shaped incision made around the areola. The combination of these two methods is also a highly preferred option. If the fat content in the breast is high, a good result can be achieved with liposuction alone; However, the incision method is more effective in people with denser hard breast tissue. In very large breasts with excess skin, it may be necessary to choose another method that leaves long scars along the breast fold.

What is the process after gynecomastia surgery?

The hospital stay after gynecomastia surgery is one night. It is recommended to use a pressure garment for approximately four weeks after discharge. Heavy exercise should be avoided during this period.

Does gynecomastia reoccur?

If the condition causing gynecomastia is not diagnosed and appropriate treatment is not provided, this condition may reoccur. In case of excessive weight gain, gynecomastia may develop in the breasts again.
