Points to Know About Nevi (Moles):

|

Nevi are common skin lesions that can be flat or raised, appearing in various colors and surface types. Sunlight exposure is a common factor in the development of nevi, especially in sun-exposed areas of the body.

Protecting the skin from the sun is crucial to prevent the darkening of nevi and the potential increase in their numbers. Regularly applying sunscreen and renewing it every two hours is recommended.

Nevi that exhibit certain changes should be evaluated by a dermatologist. These changes include growth over time, irregular borders, color changes, bleeding, or erosion. The ABCD criteria can help identify potentially concerning nevi:

A (Asymmetry): Nevi are typically symmetrical, so asymmetrical growth should be monitored closely.

B (Borders): Irregular or indented borders of a nevus can be suspicious.

C (Color): Development of different tones or excessive darkening in a nevus may indicate skin cancer.

D (Diameter): Lesions with a diameter greater than 6 millimeters should be monitored closely.

Regular dermatological examinations, especially for individuals with a genetic predisposition to skin cancer, are important for monitoring and evaluating nevi. Suspicious nevi can be diagnosed through biopsy, where a small sample of the lesion is taken for analysis.

It is important to enjoy sunny days but also to practice adequate sun protection to minimize the risk of developing new nevi or exacerbating existing ones. Remember to always prioritize sun protection and consult a dermatologist if you have any concerns about your nevi or any changes in them.
