How Should We Look at a Painting?
The Most Genuine Way to Approach Art
Murat Mete Agyar
Hello dear readers,
After a long break, it feels wonderful to write about art again…
Today, I wanted to talk about a simple yet important question with you:
How should we look at a painting?
Many people stand in front of artworks wondering, “Am I interpreting this correctly?” But art is not always about understanding first ; sometimes, it begins with feeling. For a painter, every detail matters. Whether the composition is horizontal or vertical, the colors, the lines, the empty spaces… all of them create emotion. For example, in a Mondrian painting, the black lines and primary colors are not merely geometric forms; they express balance, rhythm, and contrast. Because life itself exists within art.
Softness and hardness, silence and movement, peace and tension…
An artist ultimately reflects what they have lived, felt, and thought.
So what should we do as viewers?
I believe the most important thing is to approach an artwork sincerely. You do not have to be an expert in painting. Sometimes a piece reminds you of your childhood, sometimes it brings peace, and sometimes it unsettles you for reasons you cannot explain. Those feelings, too, are part of art.
When you look at art with your heart, an invisible connection begins to form between you and the work itself.
And perhaps that is the truest way to look at art.
With love,
