Life is a Terrace: Who You Look With Changes Everything

-

Hello dear Arttmodernmiami Gazette readers,
April has always held a special place for me. It’s that time of year when reflections quietly accumulate; when thoughts begin to settle into something more honest, more distilled. That annual piece, my personal reckoning with life, is approaching. And yes… another birthday is around the corner. I’ll write that one with care, at the end of the month.
But today, I want to pause on something more fundamental: Life itself. And the place of women within it.
“Life is layered.
Women carry you between those layers.
Every step is taken because of them.”
These anonymous lines, whose origin remains unknown, capture the human journey with poetic precision. They frame life as a structure of layers; each one a new experience, a new emotional depth, a new level of awareness.
And within this structure, they point to an invisible force:A woman.

A woman…
sometimes a guide,
sometimes a threshold,
sometimes a test.
But perhaps the real question is this:
Who are you ascending with?

Like the Hanging Gardens of Babylon…
Layer upon layer, rising into new perspectives—each level offering a different view. Much like our inner world, shaped not only by where we stand, but by how we see.
And how we see…
is rarely ours alone.
You meet a woman of taste; your perception refines.
You meet a woman of knowledge; your depth expands.
You encounter an intelligent woman;even your way of thinking transforms.
But when you encounter a woman who does not know her own worth…
the consequences can be far more complex than one might imagine.
Because life, in many ways, is the view shaped by the woman beside you.
And often…
your life becomes the woman you choose.

The terrace you stand on today…
Is not only where you’ve arrived.
It is also the result of who you are looking with.
A view, on its own, carries no meaning.
It is reconstructed through the eyes of the person beside you.
You look with them.
You see with them.
You interpret through them.
And sometimes, without realizing it,
you begin to live inside their perception of the world.

This idea echoes the journey in Divine Comedy. Dante Alighieri’s protagonist does not ascend alone. Each passage requires guidance; each level, a companion. And often, that guidance takes shape through feminine wisdom.
Rising is not just a matter of desire.
It requires the right presence.
But every ascent carries risk.
Moving between levels demands attention, grace, and awareness. Otherwise, one may fall; both metaphorically and quite literally. Not every presence elevates.Sometimes, even the most beautiful terrace can feel narrow. And sometimes, the simplest place can open into an entirely new horizon; with the right perspective. And this is where art enters. Because art transforms perception itself.

Artist: Marc Chagall
When you look at Dream by Marc Chagall, you don’t just see a scene; you see a layered universe. Figures floating through the sky, love defying gravity, colors suspended between dream and reality… For Chagall, a woman is not merely a source of inspiration. She is the center of the universe. The point where dream and reality converge.
Today, we live in a time where women are not only muses, but creators. And yet, paradoxically, our perception of women is becoming more superficial. Visibility increases, but depth often fades. But the truth remains simple:
We, as women, become what we believe.

Without recognizing our own light, we cannot illuminate any landscape. Without clarity in our gaze, we cannot read the layers of life.
Let us not forget:
A woman’s perspective can alter the course of a life.
An artist’s canvas deepens through her presence.
A society’s height is measured by the layers women carry.
Life is layered.
And we rise through those layers, often by holding a woman’s hand.
I always did.
And it was done for me.
Perhaps that is the real magic.
The first hand I held… was my grandmother’s.
May she rest in peace. 🙏🏻
Now, I try to do the same; to reach out, to hold, to guide.
With love, until the next piece….
