Crazy Girl’s Diary

|

I’d like to begin by warmly greeting the ARTTMODERNMIAMI family. For now, I’ll be contributing to the Travel & Fashion section once a month. I have to say, I’m quite excited! Why? First, being part of such a high-quality and content-rich community is a true privilege. Second, I’ll share nearly 20 years of my travel experiences with you, dear readers, through my writing.
After specializing in orthodontics, I practiced dentistry in my clinic for 20 years, which I thoroughly enjoyed. For the past six years, I’ve been a bit of a wanderer, moving entirely by choice. While I knew I wouldn’t be able to continue my profession in a new country, I didn’t anticipate how much I would struggle with not working. Thankfully, I’m slowly adjusting, and transforming my hobbies into new passions has been a great help in this process.
My travels, which began while living in Turkey, never slowed down. Driven by a love for exploring, eating, and drinking, I’ve visited many countries. I’ve always tried to avoid the typical tourist spots and instead focus on experiencing places as the locals do. I share my adventures on Instagram, posting from Boston, the New England region, across America, and beyond whenever I can. The places I visit are often those locals recommend, highlighting their favorite spots, foods, and hidden gems worth discovering.

Dear readers, I am truly in love with Boston. My journey in the U.S. began in Lake Charles, Louisiana, in 2018 with my wife and son, and now continues in Boston, Massachusetts. I have a deep love for nature, but I also adore people, which makes city life essential for me. I thrive on the movement around me—I can spend an entire day in a café, simply watching people pass by and writing stories. I love wandering through city streets for hours, letting my feet guide me. Even when I walk the same streets repeatedly, I always notice new details that capture my attention, which I photograph in my mind and then with my camera. It was only years later that I realized I was a flaneur. I’m excited to share my photos with you, and I believe you’ll enjoy them as much as I do.

Balıkesir

I lived in Balıkesir, a small city in Turkey, for almost 20 years, and the little park outside my living room window was my source of joy. From that window, I would watch the rain and snow, sip my tea or coffee, read, and say goodbye to my son each morning as I headed to work. However, when they built an unnecessary overpass next to my window, everything around me turned on concrete. Suddenly, pedestrians and cars were passing right by my second-floor window. I was heartbroken and frustrated. We even offered to cover the costs of an apartment building to restore the park, but no one listened. That moment I realized that Balıkesir I loved—and Turkey—were no longer the same for me.

Boston

Let me bring things back to the present… Now, I’m sitting in front of a window once again, a window just as I had always dreamed of. From here, I can enjoy the sight of rain, autumn leaves, magnolias, and perhaps even snow this coming winter. The frustrations and disappointments I experienced back then are actually, what led me to where I am today. I’m thankful for everything that has happened and everything I’ve been through, and I’m grateful for this moment. I also know that there won’t be any concrete pillars appearing in front of me here, which is why I truly feel at home in Boston.

If you’re curious about the stories I’ll be sharing—mostly travel routes and vibrant photos from my window, this city, and other places worldwide—I’ll be waiting for you to read my article. In addition, for anyone who finds himself or herself in Boston, I’m inviting you for coffee. Trust me, you should come! I also can’t resist sharing a few photos of the friends I enjoy peanuts and coffee with, while we chat about the beauty of the city and the colors of life.

The next time we meet, we’ll travel to Mexico, one of the most vibrant countries. Therefore, I’m heading out now—take care and stay well!
Just a quick note… Some might wonder why it’s called “Diary of a Crazy Girl”. I think you’ll understand it better once we get to know each other more.
Feel free to contact me at syakinoglu@gmail.com or through my Instagram account @saraonroad if you’re curious, especially about Boston—I’d love to hear from you!
Stay with love and happiness until the next article…
